Havlicek, Hans: Picture Gallery of Map Projections
This is a series of lectures and exercises for students of Mathematics or Descriptive Geometry (teachers programme). We present the mathematical background that is needed in order to map the (round) surface of the earth to a plane.
Also, we are concerned with the theory of distortion of such mappings. In fact, many people are not aware that the maps in their atlas are based upon a discipline of higher mathematics called differential geometry.
