Conflict and Politics

wikimedia.org / Central Intelligence Agency

For many years Northern Ireland has been the sight of a violent conflict between Nationalists and Unionists. Unionists, who are mostly Protestant, want Northern Ireland to remain a part of the United Kingdom while Nationalists, who are predominantly Catholic, want it to be unified with the Republic of Ireland.

Various violent incidents that have occurred in the twentieth century are also known as "the troubles". Due to the signing of the Belfast Agreement in 1998 many major paramilitary campaigns have either declared ceasefire or their war to be over.
